4Runner Nomad is about practical car camping, off-grid living, travel, and building a life that can move. I share the systems, places, lessons, and everyday decisions that come from nearly a decade of car camping, including more than three years living full-time from my Toyota 4Runner.
My restless journey began in my homeland of Hawaii, where I grew up in foster care and eventually aged out of the system. Moving with very few belongings was normal for me, and learning how to adapt to changing circumstances started long before I ever called a vehicle home.
Travel has been part of my life for decades. Along with nine years of car camping across the United States, I have traveled through Europe and Mexico. My experiences have included living on a boat, spending nights deep in forests without a vehicle, and living off-grid without electricity or running water years before portable solar became as accessible as it is today.
In 2019, a hiking accident forced me to slow down. Before that, it was normal for me to kayak for days, hike long distances, and camp along rivers. Slowing down changed how I traveled, but it did not remove the need to explore. I simply had to build a different way of doing it.
Car camping eventually became more than a way to travel. The 4Runner became a small, mobile home base that allows me to work online, explore new places, stay close to the outdoors, and adjust when life requires a change of plans.
That is what much of 4Runner Nomad has grown around.
I share the working side of this lifestyle as much as the destination—the campsite research, weather decisions, food and water systems, gear, safety, campground and location notes, remote work, maintenance, and the small adjustments that make long-term life on the road possible.
I have been living this way full-time for more than three years while continuing to run an online business and coordinating care for my adult son in an independent living program.
4Runner Nomad is not about proving there is one right way to live on the road. It is about showing what this version looks like, sharing what I learn along the way, and giving other people practical information they can use to build a version that works for them.
