Riven Needed More Room, So I Rebuilt Our 4Runner

Author:

My car camping layout had worked until Riven’s needs changed. By November 2025, he was having a seizure about once a month. The bed inside the 4Runner occupied too much of our available space, leaving him without enough room when a seizure happened.

A layout can look good in photographs and work well during an ordinary day. An emergency exposes every tight corner, hard edge, and piece of gear standing in the way.

Riven needed more room. That meant the bed had to change.

Taking Apart the Previous Car Camping Layout

Riven watched as I removed parts of the layout that no longer gave him enough room.

I used a friend’s garage in Louisiana so I would have a protected place to empty the 4Runner and work through the conversion. The project took several days. I removed parts of the previous layout and opened the interior before building the new sleeping area.

The goal was not to create a prettier setup. I needed to give Riven more usable space while keeping the 4Runner functional as our home. That required more than moving a few bags or shifting a toolbox. The bed itself occupied the area Riven needed, so I rebuilt the sleeping space around our new reality.

Creating More Open Space for Riven

Once I removed the old pieces, I could see how much room the previous layout had consumed. The open floor changed the way we could move through the back of the 4Runner. It also gave me better access to Riven if he needed help during or after a seizure.

Removing the previous setup opened more of the interior for Riven.

I customized a new bed that preserved a place for us to sleep without using as much of the interior. The exact construction took planning, several adjustments, and more than one stage.

I documented that process separately for members of the 4Runner Nomad Academy. The important part of this story is what the change gave Riven once the work was finished.

Testing the New 4Runner Bed

Riven loved the completed setup. He had more room around the bed and enough open floor for the moments when space became more important than storage or convenience. I could also reach him more easily without working around the previous bed arrangement.

Riven tested the completed bed after several days of work in a friend’s Louisiana garage.

The new layout solved the larger problem, but Riven noticed one missing feature immediately. From the old bed, he could look directly through the rear power window. That window gave him a view of the campsite and anything happening behind the 4Runner.

The new position no longer gave him the same view.

Riven’s Review of the New Layout

The extra room passed his inspection. Losing access to the rear window did not. To restore his view, I had to move two toolboxes out of the way. Once I did that, he could watch the activity outside from his bed again.

The rear power window was Riven’s television, and apparently the new floor plan still needed to include his favorite channel.

Changing the Setup When Life Changes

Car camping layouts are never finished just because the boards fit and the gear has a designated place. The way we use the vehicle changes. Our health changes. A dog’s needs can change faster than the system surrounding him.

My previous bed worked for us until it did not. Once Riven’s seizures became part of our routine, preserving the old arrangement made less sense than rebuilding it.

The new layout gave up one convenient window view, but we worked around that. More importantly, it gave Riven the room he needed inside our home.

I documented the complete conversion inside the 4Runner Nomad Academy, including the stages and decisions that turned the previous bed into a layout with more usable room.

Academy members can follow the process beyond the finished photographs and see what went into changing a working setup when Riven’s needs changed.
