A Beautiful Tennessee Hike With the Perfect Ending

A visit with a friend in Tennessee included a hike along the Harpeth River with Riven, followed by dinner at Coco’s Italian Market in Nashville. The trail carried us through a bright spring forest, across a small wooden bridge, and down to the water before we headed back toward the city for ravioli.

Riven came along for the full day. He spent part of the hike investigating the trail and later stopped beside the water near the falls. By the time we finished, all three of us were ready for a break.

My friend took us to Coco’s Italian Market & Restaurant, a family-owned Nashville restaurant with an Italian market attached. Walking inside felt different from entering a standard restaurant. Shelves of imported groceries, wine, sauces, pasta, and other Italian products filled the market section before we ever reached the table.

More Than a Restaurant

Coco’s traces its food back through several generations of the family’s restaurant history. The story displayed on the table described relatives who owned Italian restaurants around Albany, New York, and the recipes that continued into the Nashville location.

The restaurant and market combination made that history visible. This was not a dining room with a few Italian decorations added around it. The market shelves, red checkered tablecloths, family photographs, and written history all connected the meal to the people behind it.

Cheese Ravioli Fungi After the Hike

I ordered the Cheese Ravioli Fungi with pesto sauce. The dish came with cheese-filled ravioli, porcini mushrooms, walnuts, pancetta crumbles, parmesan, and bread.

The mushrooms and walnuts gave the plate more texture than a basic cheese ravioli dish, while the pesto pulled the ingredients together without covering them in a heavy red sauce. It was a full meal after spending part of the day on the trail.

Riven joined us on the patio and received his own water bowl. Eating outside meant he could settle beside the table while my friend and I finished the day over dinner.

A Nashville Stop Worth Remembering

The hike and the restaurant belonged together in the memory of that visit. One part of the day gave us a trail, moving water, and time outside. The other gave us a place to sit down, eat, and look through a market built around generations of Italian food.

Road trip meals often become part of how I remember a place. Nashville already had the friend I traveled there to see, a Tennessee trail shared with Riven, and a plate of ravioli waiting at the end of it.
