Road Trip Pizza: A King Supreme in Hawthorne, Nevada

Author:

I was not passing through Hawthorne on the way to somewhere else. I had time to spend before returning to Arizona, and Nevada gave me enough room to slow the route down without traveling too far away.

Summer temperatures hovered in the high 90s and occasionally reached 100 degrees. Walker Lake offered inexpensive primitive camping nearby, and I visited while I was in the area. When it came to choosing where to stay, though, I wanted power, and a little more comfort.

Whiskey Flats RV Park became my base for that part of the trip.

Finding Lovelock Pizza in Hawthorne

Pizza has become a recurring part of my travels, so I eventually made my way to Lovelock Pizza in Hawthorne.

The restaurant sits inside a much larger building that felt mostly empty during my visit. Finding the correct entrance took a little attention because the way into the pizza restaurant was not immediately obvious. Once inside, the space still had a slightly disconnected feeling, almost as though the restaurant occupied one small section of a building designed for something larger.

A Pizza Loaded With Toppings

The pizza arrived covered with pepperoni, sausage, salami, mushrooms, black olives, onions, and green peppers. They did not hold back on the toppings, and the cheese had browned nicely across the top.

It looked like the kind of pizza that should have made a stronger impression.

The restaurant rolls the crust on location, but the finished crust did not have much character. It worked as a base for the generous pile of meat and vegetables without adding anything memorable of its own.

The red sauce tasted average and reminded me of a premade pizza sauce. Nothing about it tasted bad. It simply lacked the flavor that makes me think about a pizza again after leaving town.

Was Lovelock Pizza Worth the Stop?

The supreme from Lovelock Pizza was okay. It gave me a hot, filling meal during a stretch of Nevada travel, but it will not rank among the pizzas I would plan a return trip around.

That kind of honesty belongs in this series.

Road Trip Pizza will not become a collection of glowing reviews where every restaurant serves the best pizza I have ever eaten. Some pizzas become part of the story because they surprise me. Others appeared because I needed dinner, found a local restaurant, and gave it a try.

This one belongs to the second category.

Hawthorne gave me an affordable place to stay near Walker Lake, enough comfort to manage the summer heat, and somewhere to spend a little time before turning the 4Runner back toward Arizona. Lovelock Pizza became one meal inside that larger Nevada stop.

The pizza may not have been remarkable, but it still deserves a place in the travel record.
