These Fans Are Six Years Old and Still Going Strong

Fans may look like summer gear, but I use mine every day of the year. Together, they create a cross breeze and help move fresh air through a space that can become stuffy quickly. Even when it is cold outside, I still run them.

Creating a Cross Breeze Inside the 4Runner

Katan has six windows that can open, including the moonroof and powered rear window. This gives me several ways to bring outside air into the 4Runner and release warmer air.

Opening a window does not always create airflow, especially when there is little wind outside. The fans help push air through the vehicle instead of allowing it to remain in one area.

I keep one fan on each side of my living space. Depending on which windows I open and where I point the fans, I can move air across my bed or through the length of the 4Runner.

One fan moves air. Two fans give me more control over where it goes.

My Bug Screens Stay on the Windows

The bug screens stay installed on my rear windows, so I can open them for ventilation without adding another setup task.

The rear passenger windows and powered back window have bug screens designed to remain in place. I do not need to unpack or install them every time I want more ventilation.

I can lower a window, turn on the fans, and create airflow without inviting every mosquito in the area to join us.

That convenience becomes important with equipment I use daily. If I had to set up the window screens at every stop, I probably would not adjust the windows as often as I do.

I Use the Fans During Cold Weather Too

Hot weather is only one reason I carry fans. During warmer conditions, they keep air moving around me and Rex.

They do not replace air conditioning when temperatures become dangerous, but they make the 4Runner more comfortable when the weather remains within a safe range.

Cold weather creates a different challenge. Keeping every window closed may hold in warmth, but it also traps stale air and moisture.

I usually run the fans at a lower speed and open the windows only slightly. I am not trying to cool down the interior. I am keeping the air circulating.

My 4Runner has approximately 27 square feet of floor space. It serves as my bedroom, office, gear storage area, and shelter during bad weather. It is also where I share space with a 40-pound dog.

Breathing adds moisture to the air overnight. Damp towels, wet gear, changing weather, and Rex can add even more. Opening the windows provides ventilation, while the fans help direct the air toward those openings.

They also make the 4Runner feel less closed in when I spend several hours working from my bed. The temperature may not change very much, but the interior feels more comfortable when the air is not sitting still.

A Full Charge Lasts About a Day and a Half

A fully charged fan lasts approximately a day and a half when I run it on low. Each fan has three battery indicators:

  • 100 percent
  • 60 percent
  • 30 percent

I plug them in when they reach 60 percent because charging can take four to six hours. Waiting until 30 percent would give me less flexibility, especially when my refrigerator, phones, Starlink, laptop, and other equipment also rely on the power I collect and store.

Solar conditions and driving time affect when I can recharge equipment. Starting early gives me a buffer if clouds reduce my solar input or another device needs power. I can also charge one fan while continuing to use the other.

The fans use different charging cords, so I keep both types available with my power equipment.

Six Years of Regular Use

These fans have traveled with me through several versions of my camping setup and handled years of changing temperatures and regular use. Since I began living in the 4Runner full-time, they have become equipment I depend on nearly every day.

I have tested plenty of gear over the years, but I have never needed to replace or upgrade these fans. Six years later, both still work, and that is a better recommendation than anything printed on the box.
