Every winter, travelers make their way to Quartzsite, Arizona, where the desert fills with RVs, vans, car campers, and people who have figured out that spending the colder months in the Southwest is a pretty good arrangement.

Roy Skeleton arrived in December 2025 and settled into the desert routine without much trouble. Between cooking, meeting people, and making himself comfortable around camp, he had a full social calendar.
For a skeleton who doesn’t technically need to eat, he sure spent a lot of time around food.
Reporting for Skeleton Crew Duty
Roy has always been willing to supervise camp operations, but Quartzsite gave him an opportunity to expand his responsibilities.

Some days, he worked behind the 4Runner, where the tailgate kitchen kept everyone fed. Other times, he took charge of the propane grill. His cooking qualifications remain questionable, but nobody seemed particularly concerned about letting a skeleton handle dinner.

Of course, having other campers around meant Roy had plenty of opportunities to take a break from work. He was especially good at finding a comfortable chair and letting someone else take over the cooking
The Official Greeter at Frenchy’s Fireside Chats
Roy managed to find himself another job while we were in Quartzsite. He became the greeter for Frenchy’s fireside chats, which brought campers together for conversations and time around the fire. His responsibilities were fairly straightforward. Greet everyone and make everyone feel welcome.

For once, Roy had a position that matched his qualifications perfectly. He didn’t have to cook, clean, organize anything, or remember anyone’s name. He just needed to sit there and look approachable.
I’m not sure whether he was welcoming the neighbors or campaigning for mayor of Quartzsite, but he appeared comfortable with the attention.
Meeting the Car Camping and Living Community
One of the things I enjoy about returning to Quartzsite is getting to spend time with people from the Car Camping and Living Community. Online conversations are one thing, but sitting around a campsite, sharing meals, and finally putting faces to names brings another dimension to the community.

Roy had no trouble making himself part of the gatherings. He met several community members, posed for pictures, and generally behaved like someone who had been personally invited to every campsite in the desert.
At one point, someone even carried Roy across camp. Apparently, he had reached the point in his social career where walking was no longer necessary.

Roy Meets Skeleton Wendy at Wizard Camp
Roy’s social adventures eventually brought him to Wizard Camp, where he met Skeleton Wendy. Now, Wendy is considerably taller than Roy, which made their introduction entertaining enough before anyone started wondering whether there might be a little romance in the desert.
There wasn’t.

Wendy wasn’t interested in Roy romantically, and I think we can all agree that introducing a complicated relationship into the 4Runner Nomad crew would have been unnecessary.
Roy already creates enough problems on his own. Still, it was nice for him to meet another skeleton who understood the challenges of spending an entire winter outside without skin.
At least they had something in common.
Christmas in the Desert
By the time Christmas rolled around, Roy had settled into his winter campsite. He decorated a little Christmas tree, put on his Santa hat, and somehow managed to collect a few sweet treats along the way.

There were M&M’s and a candy cane, which seemed like a reasonable holiday haul for someone without a digestive system.
Christmas in Quartzsite looks a little different from the traditional holiday setting. Instead of snow-covered trees and decorated houses, there are desert mountains, camping chairs, solar panels, and the occasional skeleton wearing a Santa hat.
Roy didn’t seem to mind the change of scenery.
An Unforgettable Double Rainbow
One of the most memorable moments of Roy’s winter stay had nothing to do with his questionable employment history or social activities. A double rainbow appeared over the desert. The colors stretched across the sky while the setting sun brought warm light to the mountains and surrounding campsite.

Roy happened to be sitting near the American flag, giving me an opportunity to capture one of my favorite photographs of him. I have seen some incredible sunsets and weather displays while car camping, but this was one of those moments when you stop whatever you’re doing and appreciate what’s happening around you.
Even Roy managed to stay out of trouble long enough for a picture.
Another Winter for the Books
There is something about Quartzsite that brings out Roy’s social side. Give him a camping chair, a few neighbors, and an audience willing to entertain his nonsense, and he’s right at home.
By the time we were ready to move on, he had made himself a familiar face around camp. I’m fairly certain he would have stayed longer if I hadn’t reminded him that the 4Runner was leaving with or without him.
Fortunately, Roy still has plenty of adventures ahead of him, and I suspect his next questionable decision isn’t far away.
Follow more of Roy’s adventures as he travels with the 4Runner Nomad crew, meets interesting characters, and finds new ways to make life on the road a little less ordinary.
