Killebrew Park is a little-known treasure that sits right where the old Burke’s Ferry used to carry folks across the river between Worth and Lee Counties.
The park is named after Emmett Killebrew, the brilliant engineer behind the Power Commission’s hydro dam. He’s the same guy who designed the Georgia Power hydro dam in Albany. Pretty impressive resume for the park’s namesake!
Upon arrival, the process couldn’t be simpler – just pick a campsite that catches your eye, call the number posted on the sign, and an employee will meet you there to complete your check-in. This hassle-free system made getting settled a breeze.

When I pulled in, I was immediately struck by how peaceful it felt under all those shade trees draped with Spanish moss. The park offers ten campsites spread out nicely. Normally, each site has water hookups, but during my visit, we hit a cold snap with freezing temperatures, so they had turned the water off temporarily. The bathroom facilities were closed too, which was a minor inconvenience, but I came prepared.
One thing I should mention—the park does have an emergency dam flooding system with warning sirens. Sounds dramatic, right? But don’t worry, nothing like that happened during my stay.

The camping fee is surprisingly affordable—a real bargain compared to most places I’ve stayed. Just keep in mind they have a 14-day maximum stay policy, which seems fair to give everyone a chance to enjoy the place.
The picnic area is separate from the campsites, which meant day visitors didn’t disturb the camping section—another thoughtful design element.
For anyone planning a visit, I’d recommend bringing extra water if you’re coming during winter months, just in case the pipes are frozen like during my stay. Otherwise, it’s pretty much set up for an easy, no-fuss camping experience.
If you’re passing through southwest Georgia and need a place to camp for a few nights without breaking the bank, give this little park a try. The history, riverside location, and peaceful atmosphere make it well worth the visit.
