Some campsites work best as a base for exploring. Others give you enough reason to stay close to camp. South Carlsbad State Beach gave us both. I parked the 4Runner beside my friends’ teardrop trailer, set up camp with Riven, and spent the visit enjoying the California coast without filling every hour of the day.
Setting up our different camping styles
Our campsite brought two small-rig setups together. I had the 4Runner, while my friends camped from their teardrop trailer with an attached room.
Neither setup required a large campsite or a complicated arrival process. Once we parked and organized the shared space, we could settle into the slower part of camping.
Riven claimed a place beside the 4Runner while we handled everything else.
A campground above the Pacific Ocean
South Carlsbad State Beach Campground sits along the coastal bluffs north of San Diego. From the campground, we could look across the beach and watch the Pacific Ocean beneath a changing layer of clouds.
Wildflowers added color along the bluff during our stay. The setting felt distinctly Southern California, with ocean views on one side and tall palm trees around the campground entrance.
Some campsites sit closer to the bluff, while others occupy the inland side of the campground. Checking the campground map before reserving can help you understand the location and utility options for each site.
Campfire nights and games with friends
The trip did not need a long list of planned activities. We built a campfire, brought out the cards, added snacks and music, and spent time together at the campsite. Those ordinary parts of the visit became just as important as anything we could have scheduled away from camp.
Car camping with friends creates a different rhythm from traveling alone. Meals, games, and conversations naturally become shared activities rather than items to finish before moving on to the next stop.
An unexpected dinosaur display
We also visited a small dinosaur display near the campground. One of the dinosaurs stood beside a green alien wearing a white laboratory coat, which raised several scientific questions and answered absolutely none of them. It was an unexpected bit of roadside-style entertainment during a coastal camping trip.
The display did not require an entire day. It simply gave us something unusual to investigate before returning to camp.
A practical base near Carlsbad
South Carlsbad State Beach worked well for spending time with friends while keeping us close to beaches and attractions around Carlsbad.
The campground offers oceanfront and inland campsites, including a limited number with hookups. Reservations can fill quickly, especially during popular travel periods.
