Roy had been restless ever since he decided he needed a cowboy hat. Most people would visit a store. Roy ran off to Texas. The first sighting placed him in Decatur, standing in front of the downtown mural and looking pleased with himself. He still had no cowboy hat, and one detail raised a more immediate concern.
His leg was missing.

I have traveled with this skeleton long enough to know that asking for a reasonable explanation rarely produces one. Still, losing an entire leg during a hat-shopping trip requires a story.
It did not take long for that story to surface.
Roy Went All In

Someone spotted Roy at a saloon, seated at a poker table with three cowboys. Chips covered the table, the other players looked serious, and Roy appeared far too confident for someone gambling with limited funds and apparently limited limbs.
According to the story developing in the comments, Roy went all in. He nearly lost his leg at the poker table. That explanation would sound ridiculous if the photographic evidence did not place him in the middle of the game.
Whether he won the hand remains unclear. The fact that he left town in a hurry suggests the evening did not end in his favor.
The Fastest Exit From Texas

The next sighting showed Roy on horseback, racing past an old saloon with dust flying behind him. He had finally acquired the cowboy hat and his leg was still missing.
I cannot confirm whether he won the hat, traded for it, or grabbed it while running for the door. I can confirm that he looked much happier leaving town than the cowboys at the poker table probably did.
The Texas side quest began with a restless skeleton searching for a cowboy hat. It ended with poker, a missing leg, and Roy fleeing town on horseback.
At this point, I’m starting to think he really is trading body parts for gas money.
