Riven’s Important New Job at Wild Ridge

Author:

I spent the summer workamping at Wild Ridge, a 40-acre property with several projects happening across the land. We were preparing sites for water tanks and shaping the ground so rainwater would drain in the right direction.

Riven came to work with me and took an interest in everything happening around him. He kept track of the equipment, visited the farmhand and stayed close enough to know where I was.

Preparing the Wild Ridge Property

The projects required more than clearing a few patches of dirt. Heavy equipment prepared some areas, while other sections needed people with rakes and hand tools to finish leveling the ground.

The work moved between several spots on the property. Each area had to support the water system or direct rain away from places where it could cause trouble later.

Riven had full range of the property while someone stayed with him. He never wandered through an active construction area alone, and someone accompanied him whenever he moved to another location.

Riven Joined the Crew

Riven liked checking on the people working around the property. He would visit the farmhand, look over the work area and settle nearby where he could keep everyone in view.

He never picked up a rake or moved any dirt. His contribution involved lying in a strategic location and watching other people handle that part. Riven also kept an eye on me. Even when he visited someone else, he stayed aware of where I was and what was happening around us.

Riven selected a resting place that allowed him to continue monitoring the worksite.

The construction brought equipment, people and constant movement into different parts of the property. Riven followed that activity with his ears even when the rest of him looked completely relaxed.

He treated each work area like another section under his supervision. Once the equipment stopped and the crew finished leveling the ground, he could inspect the results without getting his paws involved in the actual labor.

I had the workamping position, but Riven worked hard at making sure no one completed a project without an audience. Meals and access to 40 acres covered his compensation, and he never once asked for a day off.
